I think this is such a great post. It is so important for parents to be aware and vigilant when it comes to anything to do with our kids.

So true – these topics are rarely easy to talk about, but it’s our responsibility to have these discussions. It’s always better coming from us than from their friends (or from any other source that doesn’t have their best interests at heart).

What a horrible tragedy! I can’t even imagine. It’s stories like this that really hit home how important it is to talk to our kids, even as young as the 3rd grade.

Thanks so much for your wonderful comment, Caroline! I appreciate you sharing your story and your very true words about finding the right balance when it comes to this kind of discussion. I have no doubt that your active involvement in sobriety is incredibly good modeling for your daughter. You won’t just be talking the talk – you’re showing her how a problem with alcohol can affect someone and how challenging it can be. It can’t get much more effective than that.

So true! I’m not looking forward to broaching certain topics with my daughter (booze, sex, drugs, etc.) but I know it’s my job to tell her what’s what!

this is a good reminder. My kids are young and so I often don’t think it applies but really it does. There can often be situations where a discussion can open up.
