Both my husband and I think a university education is important. We both have degrees and hope our girls will go on to university. We’ve already started RESP’s for them both (Registered Education Savings Plans) and also have a trust fund started. I lucked out with a very small school debt and my husband managed to get through without incurring any (thanks to going to a local school and having great parents who let him live at home for free) but we don’t want either of our girls to worry about money when all they should worry about is learning.

However, should they decide to not go to school that is fine with me as well. Ultimately it is their life (but I can guarantee I will encourage school ;) and thankfully an unused RESP can be rolled into mine or my husband’s RRSP minus any contributions made by the gov’t.

I could not agree more. I started at community college and so did my sister and brother before we all went on to 4 year colleges and then graduate school. It was a perfect way for us to begin our college career without breaking the bank AND we got an excellent education at JC as well.

On another note, good for you for still getting your college education while having children! There is no way I could handle going back to school while raising one child, let alone more! Impressive and inspiring, to say the least.

I had two of my three children while still in college, so, since I was a poor college kid myself, saving for their college tuition when they were young was not in the cards for me or my husband.

Now that my first will be graduating in four years, we’ve been working to have our finances in order to help her when the time comes. We’re encouraging community college. Both my husband and I started at community college, I’ve taught at a community college, and taught at a private college. Having taught college freshmen the exact same classes at the private college as the community college–and watching the freshmen or parents of freshmen paying $42K a year instead of $2K–I think it is a financially savvy choice to make. Besides, when you get your bachelor’s degree, it does not say that the first two years were spent at a community college. I know my daughter–who is an honor’s student–is going to get a lot of peer pressure as people ask her, “Where are you going to college?” It’s not as prestigious to say you’re starting at a community college. However, in the end, she will have a lot less debt (and so will we) as she starts out in life.

Great post! My husband and I will be paying off student loans until we die (I’m only slightly exagerating!) and I do NOT want that for my son. Looking forward to reading through the website you recommended.

Thanks for your comment.

I've actually never met a parent that didn't have expectations of their child! My son could grow up to be a starving artist or a trash collector and I would not think less of him. However, college is something that cannot be replicated in any other form and I strongly believe that it's something that is extremely valuable for most people, no matter their career interests. I have very few expectations of my child. I want him to be a good person, be respectful towards others, and be educated. What he does with those tools will be up to him.

Thanks again for sharing and I look forward to reading your blog post on the topic!
