What a great post; I wish I had known about the day and could have written about it too. At the beginning of this year we started to sponsor a child in the Philippines, but I love the 1% pledge site and am going to check it out. Thanks for the heads up!

We make a point of teaching the kids to give back. We have helped at soup kitchens and contributed old toys/clothing. It is not perfect, but hopefully it is helping to teach the kids something about life and our obligations to others.

Hi Aimee. I have been following the progress of a particular charity that was founded by a family friend, Carl Stefan. His wife is from a small town in the Phillipines that has extreme poverty. On his facebook page, he shares with everyone of the work that they are doing. He tells incredible stories of the villagers and the terrible circumstances that they must overcome to simply survive. Because the connection to this charity is so direct, I feel comfortable in knowing that donations are being used for the improving the life of the villagers in this remote location in the Philippines. He and his wife formed a charity called Each One Feed One - Each One Teach One. It is a 501(C)(3) Charitable organization. His site: http://www.eofo-eoto.org/

Their goal for those who wish to donate: Educate one child and feed one child by making a small sacrifice monthly.
One child can go to school for $8 per month and 20 dollars can buy a nearly 50 kgs of rice.
What I love about his page is this bit of advice:
"Money is a bounty and a tool from our creator.. it is not
for excess, it is not for greed. It is for humanity including
the TRUSTED of GOD.. Let's guard His trust."

I enjoy your blog very much! Best,
Larissa Marantz
