I find it’s really hard to give control over to my daughter as she gets older. I have to let go of things being done right and let her make mistakes. I do hate having to clean up the spilled milk though.

Great comment and so true. When parents try to be the "perfect" parent or try to be the "cool" parent or the best friend, it usually doesn't work out well for the parent or the child. And I agree about showing your human side. Kids appreciate it when they know their parents made a mistake, own up to it, and apologize. Showing children how to take responsibility for your own actions and words is so important (and sadly not common enough).

I gave up being the “perfect” mom long time ago. I think I have very healthy relationship with my boys and I do try to give them balance in life. I try my best to give praise when praise is needed and punish when punishment is required. I never tried to be their friend. I always was and I always will be their mom. I am stickler for rules, but I do have my bad days with little freak-outs and undeserved punishment. I think that shows make kids that I am a human and that we all make mistakes.
