My daughter had an Irish dad and I am 100% Jewish. We agreed to raise our daughter Jewish and we married by a rabbi. I'll never forget the time she came home from Hebrew Nursery School crying. The other kids said she wasn't really "Jewish". I told her she was 100% Jewish. She has a small tattoo on her of a 4 leaf clover and a Jewish Star.. showing her inner debate, even as a young adult.
She is now married to a Jewish man and is raising 3 very Jewish children. She always loved Judaism and could have been turned away by cruel words. Anyone who wants to be Jewish should be.. regardless of who their parents prayed to or the religion they were born into.

I like cashew much better than jewlock, the loving term that my cousin gave my kids. Even though Polish isn’t a religion he thought that it fit well. I love being able to show my kids both religions. They feel special, especially since a lot of families in our are are Catholic so they are intrigued by the Jewish culture. We figured that one day our kids will decide which religion is a good fit for the and we will honor their choice. I am just curious what is going to happen when they see their cousins’ bat mitzvahs!

I have been wondering about that title for a while on Sits, so I finally came to see what its about.

I also agree its great to live in a society where you can align yourself with any religion you choose to. I’m glad you found your place, especially within yourself!

Great post. I am a full Jew but grew up in a totally Catholic town so no one ever “got” me. They never knew why they had the day off for Rosh Hashanah, what the strange “cracker” I was eating for Passover was or why the Easter Bunny didn’t visit me. I just always felt different. And growing up, it was embarrassing to be different. I am working to have my kids feel accepted and “normal” in their surroundings even though they’re still the minority. It’s great that you are allowing your son to feel like he has a place, to feel welcomed and accepted as he should!

Visiting from SITS… I’ll be back!

Thanks for your comment! It really is interesting how some mixed-ethnic people align with one ethnic background over the other. I find it pretty fascinating and I'm always curious as the back-story behind it. Thanks for sharing!
