They have a legal right to build there and that should be upheld. There is no doubt in my mind that we shouldn’t paint every Muslim as a terrorist. It is wrong and untrue. However I am very uncomfortable with this center and would prefer to see them build it elsewhere in the city. That might not be the right move and I may change my mind. I am very conscious of precedents. But, a comment the imam made the other day really set me off. He said that we can’t let “radicals” here stop it from being built because of what the “radicals” in the Arab world might do. And that is precisely the wrong reason to build it. They aren’t running around singing our praises now. State run media routinely run Anti-West pieces. They intentionally blame the West for many of the problems. It is a tactic that the dictators use to keep the people angry with someone other them themselves. Anyway, I don’t want to hijack your comment section. Yes, today should be a reminder to extol hypocrisy, but I think it should also be a reminder to do more — take those words, and put them into action.
