5-7 hours a night is great, Lucy! You're definitely not alone on the anti-CIO sentiment. Actually, it looks like there is a lot more research out there backing up what our Mama-instincts are already telling us. I plan on writing another post soon that lists what the research says, so keep a look out for that. Thanks for sharing your thoughts.

Thank you for this. I have a 3 1/2 month old and it seems like everyone I know who has a baby, once had a baby, ever plans to have a baby is a fan of CIO. And it just feels wrong for my baby. I was beginning to think maybe I was a wimp or that Little Ricky would never develop good sleep habits, but he's doing anywhere from 5-7 hours a night before he wakes up to eat and then he goes back down. Plus hearing that your son grew out of needing to be rocked to sleep reinforces what I felt deep down all along.

Lastly, I completely agree with you about loving on my baby as much as possible now. I have a feeling one day I might regret letting him CIO. But I don't think I will ever regret the time I spent holding him.

Thanks again for making me feel like I wasn't alone in my anti-CIO feelings!

Thanks for the compliment! Your situation obviously resonates with mine quite well. We're also pro-binkies and pro-bottle, as long as it's milk or water. The binkies in the crib, once the baby can find them, is a great way to help a baby/toddler self-soothe. Thanks again for your kind words and great feedback!

Wow…great post! (Great blog, too!) This is a good thorough introduction to a really stressful and common problem. Cry it out works for a lot of people, but not us.

We have an 18 month old, and we’ve run the gauntlet of sleep problems and tried every solution we can think of: making the lights brighter/darker, making the room colder/warmer, using (or not using) a sound machine, cry-it-out/rock-to-sleep. We found that cry-it-out was just not good for our family. It was terribly stressful for us to hear our daughter so upset. And if you do the math, having her cry for hours means that she would get LESS sleep than if we would spend 15 or 20 minutes comforting her. (Yes, I know that the theory is that you do this just a few times and then they sleep just fine, but that wasn’t our experience during the 10 days we tried it…we all were just more tired and more stressed!) In the end we just felt like we were being cold and lazy and that it was worth being a little tired to know that our daughter felt comfortable and loved. Sorry if that sounds judgmental of cry it out parents but that just didn’t feel like love to us.

The most helpful thing we found was leaving a bottle and couple extra binkies in her crib. We found that she most often woke up because she needed either a little milk or lost her binky. Problem mostly solved…

Maybe I’m just a sap, but your closing got me choked up. Made me already sad for when my daughter doesn’t need us anymore. ;-(
