You’re not alone. I’ve been stressed about the same thing since Zach, now 4, was 2. And I have a 21mo who’s heading down the same path, but not as bad.
Veggies is not the problem at our house. It’s proteins. If it’s not chicken nuggets then they’re skeptical to the point of refusal. Everyone’s telling me the same thing. They won’t starve. We do have a “No-Thank-You Bite” policy. This usually works because he knows he’s only required one bite. Sill looking for more advice. Will try that website suggestion from Jen (above ).

Wow do I relate to the picky eating. It started with food "preferences" now it's down to a laundry list of foods my son just won't touch. I agree that hiding food doesn't teach him to eat the veggies, but boy is it a daily struggle. Plus I'm always worried about his weight slipping.

I really like this website http://childrenandbabiesnoteating.com/index.html It has lots of information on picky eating and why some kids just don't eat (even when they should be hungry). I learned a lot from it.

Hope it gets easier from here.

From Aimee: I sometimes get comments via e-mail regarding my posts and this one came in to help me and other parents of picky eaters. I thought it was great advice that needs to be shared!:

My son has also gone weeks without veggies sometimes. Now that he understands "if" statements though. I always put a small amount of what he really wants to eat on his plate from the beginning, he eats that first (usually the bread or equivalent) and then I tell him that he can have more after bites of the meat and vegetable. We may have to go through the process two or three times before the end of the meal, but that way it is in front of him literally and in his mind and not in the far distant future for a 3 year old. This also prevents me from having to serve an actual dessert every night and I can save special treats for other good behaviors.

Hi to parents of picky eaters!!!!

It is totally true what briya says...they cannot starve themselves, so do not worry about that one. Next, you can TOTALLY sneak in healthy stuff without him even knowing! I am a step-mom of some older kids and 'hiding", I found, is the key!

You can puree lots of veggies and throw them into dishes he will accept (Mom -1 , Picky Eaters -0!!!)without him knowing (the falvor stays pretty close to the original). There are tons of recipes on the internet and cookbooks for sale. You can make mac and cheese, spaghetti & sauce, chicken figures and even brownies that are super healthy (no fat and no/low sugar) and all with hidden veggies! Also, helps mom to feel a bit better when they leave those 'new' veggies on the plate....

There are also a couple decent juices ( out there that have the hidden veggie servings - Apple & Eve is pretty good (it is also 40% water) and widely available :-)

I hope you are able to get one up on your little guy and pass him some healthy items that are incognito!

you know what? *I* am a picky eater. And my mom told me the Pediatrician says that no child ever starved himself to death. I outgrew some of it, although…I am very wary of new foods. I think mostly it’s a phase that most get over.
