Thanks for your comment! Funny you should mention the Cesar Milan book since someone just gave me a copy of it. I look forward to reading it! From my understanding, training a dog is very similar to training children. Ha!

OK, you both have me thinking Border Collies now! They sound like a great family dog.

I don't know much about labradoodles, but I've heard positive things about that breed from a few people.

Decisions, decisions...

I'm so sorry about the recent loss of your Lucky! He was clearly a very special dog. I know how dogs become like family member and how hard their deaths can be to go through. My condolences, Perry.

Well, you know our family is partial to border collies, which are fantastic family dogs so long as they get enough exercise and/or have a job. But they do shed a bit. Not as much as goldens, but they won't yield a hair-free home, for sure. Have you looked into labradoodles? I've known a few of them. They're hypoallergenic (as much as you can be as a dog), don't shed, and have really great dispositions.

Our family dog, Lucky, just passed away after a long and happy life. We didn’t expect to adopt a dog that morning at the shelter, just came to look and see what the procedure was. They asked us to stick around to see a dog coming in from a foster home (who knew they had them for dogs?) and in came a beautiful golden/border collie mix: black, with white ruff and feet, propeller tail. Nothing shook this dog. Not Tweenie petting him so hard you could see all the white of his eyes, not Little Man looking in his ears while practically riding him, not the barking and the kid noise and the yelling in the shelter. We looked at each other, The Hubby and I, and I said, “Well, we’ll never find another dog this patient.” After a background check, references and home visit that would’ve qualified us to adopt a child, Lucky was ours. He had the most amazing temperament, would herd the boy and keep him safely in the yard, smart, loyal, protective and sweet. You couldn’t ask for a better breed/mix if you have kids. Hair, though. Lots of hair. But well worth it. Good luck with your adoption adventures!

Stopping by from SITS :)

I grew up with a golden retriever, it was awesome! but they do shed – so do labs. A Labradoodle won’t shed (it’s a cross between a Lab and a poodle – so they are smart, don’t shed, and loveable, great for kids – I don’t have one, but I know someone who does) – I have a jack russell terrier, I adore him, but he does shed little white hairs.

Either way, cesar milan (the dog whisperer) just came out with a new book about how to train a dog – even if you get an older dog it will be priceless information and highly recommend it – tivo a couple of dog whisperer episodes too – all that info will be instrumental in having success going forward with a dog – (excercise, discipline and then affection in that order) – i’ve learned so much about how dogs think in that “pack” mentality and what boundaries and limitations are important to establish with them – so cool!

good luck! come visit me anytime at mangiabella!

Stopping by from SITS!!

I grew up mostly with mutts, usually lab mixes of some sort, but my parents always shaved the hairier of the two when the summer came so they wouldn’t be hot and shed as much. We have a weimaraner-lab mix that hardly ever barks (except occasionally at a squirrel or if someone he doesn’t recognize comes over) and he is amazing. He is really well behaved with our one year old, although he can be a little over-excited sometimes, but he is great. I hope you find the perfect dog for your family!!

I will definitely consider a high-risk shelter and will look into the local shelters you mentioned. We hear so many stories about pit bulls (or even mixed pit) having aggressive behavioral problems but I suppose it has more to do with their training than anything else. I won't rule a pit mix out.

Excellent tips, Cheryl. Thank you!
